It whistled bitter-cold and free,<\/div>\n
As a sword leapt from its sheath.<\/div>\n
The lord of snows upreared his head;<\/div>\n
His mantle long and pale<\/div>\n
Upon the bitter blast was spread<\/div>\n
And hung o\u2019er hill and dale.<\/div>\n
The world was blind,<\/div>\n
the boughs were bent,<\/div>\n
All ways and paths were wild:<\/div>\n
Then the veil of cloud apart was rent,<\/div>\n
And here was born a Child.<\/div>\n
The ancient dome of heaven sheer<\/div>\n
Was pricked with distant light;<\/div>\n
A star came shining white and clear<\/div>\n
Alone above the night.<\/div>\n
In the dale of dark in that hour of birth<\/div>\n
One voice on a sudden sang:<\/div>\n
Then all the bells in Heaven and Earth<\/div>\n
Together at midnight rang.<\/div>\n
Mary sang in this world below:<\/div>\n
They heard her song arise<\/div>\n
O\u2019er mist and over mountain snow<\/div>\n
To the walls of Paradise,<\/div>\n
And the tongue of many bells was stirred<\/div>\n
in Heaven\u2019s towers to ring<\/div>\n
When the voice of mortal maid was heard,<\/div>\n
That was mother of Heaven\u2019s King.<\/div>\n
Glad is the world and fair this night<\/div>\n
With stars about its head,<\/div>\n
And the hall is filled with laughter and light,<\/div>\n
And fires are burning red.<\/div>\n
The bells of Paradise now ring<\/div>\n
With bells of Christendom,<\/div>\n
And Gloria, Gloria we will sing<\/div>\n
